The number 710 refers to the Indian Standard IS:710, which specifies the requirements for boiling water proof (BWP) plywood. Plywood certified under IS:710 has been tested to withstand boiling water immersion for 72 hours without delamination. This is the highest water-resistance grade available in Indian plywood.

We strongly advise against it, especially in Gujarat's humid climate. Commercial (MR-grade) plywood handles mild humidity but will swell and delaminate when exposed to water splashes, steam from cooking, or sink overflows. Kitchen cabinets below the countertop must always use marine plywood. For wall-mounted units away from the sink, MR-grade may work but BWP is safer.

For kitchen base unit carcasses, use 18mm or 19mm marine plywood — this provides the structural strength to support stone countertops. For wall-mounted units, 12mm is standard. Cabinet shutters (doors) should be 12mm. Back panels can be 6mm. Always use BWP grade for all kitchen components.

Marine plywood typically costs 30–50% more than commercial plywood of the same thickness. However, this premium is worth it for wet areas as replacing swollen commercial plywood within 3–5 years costs far more than the initial investment in marine plywood. BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) can withstand water splashes but isn't meant for immersion. BWP (Boiling Water Proof) or Marine Grade can survive 72 hours of continuous boiling without delaminating, making it 100% waterproof.

IS:710 plywood of the grade we supply is treated with Glue Line Protection (GLP), which carries the treatment into every glue line rather than only the face. Calibrated ply is sanded on both sides to achieve an even thickness across the entire sheet. This is critical for modular kitchen work where even a 1mm deviation can cause alignment issues with cabinets.

While you can use it everywhere for maximum longevity, we usually recommend it for 'wet zones' like kitchens and bathrooms. For dry areas like bedrooms, MR Grade or Block Board is more cost-effective.

Marine plywood can be used for shuttering but it is not cost-effective. We recommend our dedicated shuttering plywood which is specifically designed for concrete formwork with film-faced surfaces for easy release and multiple reuses. It costs significantly less than marine plywood for this purpose.
